Two Cicada

These pictures are from May 19, 2004 (and the very early morning of May 20).

I have noticed a funny thing about cicadas -- some of them seem to have synchronized their watches.

Until they started emerging at the same time, I didn't pay much attention to the guys on the left. In fact, to be fair, I'm not even sure that the cicadas in the top left picture are the same as the ones in the other pictures.

From the time they started at about 11:00, until the last picture, which I took at about 2 a.m., they did the same things at the same time.

I was really happy when I found the two on the flowers, because I thought the pictures would be very pretty. In fact, there were four cicadas on the plant, all doing thing pretty much at the same time, but I couldn't get them all in the picture. (You can click here for a picture where I managed to get 3, but I had to lie down in the mud to get it.)

I found them at about 11:00 p.m., but they were slooooow -- they didn't even start coming out until about 1:15 in the morning. By then, I was muddy, itchy (mosquitos), out of coffee, and tired... so I didn't watch the whole thing.
